Our facilities in Jacksonville and Amelia Island specialize in the most advanced oncology therapies available for all types of cancer. The interdisciplinary team at Ackerman Cancer Center is professional, compassionate, and dedicated to the highest level of care for patients and their families.
Our team includes Board Certified Radiation Oncologists, Board Certified Medical Physicists, Certified Medical Dosimetrists, Oncology Certified Nurses, Radiation Therapists, Oncology Certified Social Workers and an Oncology Certified Dietician.
Our facilities offer advanced treatments such as IMRT, IGRT, SRS, SBRT, VMAT, HDR Brachytherapy, AccuBoost Breast Cancer Radiotherapy, Gamma Knife, RayStation treatment planning, MOSAIQ EMR, Elekta Linear Accelerators and a MEVION S250 Proton Therapy System.
We also offer comprehensive diagnostic services for the convenience of our patients. These services include: PET/CT, CT, MRI, mammography, ultrasound and bone density scanning.
Company History
Ackerman Cancer Center, formerly known as First Coast , was established in 1997. The original Jacksonville office staff included a nurse, a receptionist, a dosimetrist, a physicist, one part-time and 2 full time radiation therapisst. In 1997, approximately 12-15 patients were treaded per day, and 2-3 patients underwent CT simulation each week.
In the 20 years that followed, Ackerman Cancer Center has experienced tremendous growth while contributing a great deal to North Florida's healtcare landscape. Our practice opened an office in Amelia Island in 1998, expanded our Jacksonville office in 2008, and expanded our Amelia Island office in 2016. Because of these expansions, our practice is able to offer a multidisciplinary approach to cancer tgreatment, with 4 radiation oncologists, one medical oncologist, 3 linear accelerators, PET/CT/ scanning and other diagnostic services in our molecular medicine suite, and a combined total of 10 exam rooms in a spacious and soothing environment.
The September 2014 Ackerman Cancer Center name change heralded the opening of our proton therapy treatment center in the Jacksonville office, which would be accessible not just to our Jacksonville and Amelia Island patients, but to cancer patients beyond the First Coast. We began treating patients with Proton Therapy in 2015, and will soon add a secone machine for this treatment modality.
Ackerman Cancer Center is honored to have become a multidisciplinary cancer treatment center in our 20 years as a practice. Many things have changed, but one truth always remains the same: we deliver the cancer care that our patients deserve.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
Ackerman Cancer Center is the only private medical practice in the world offering proton radiation therapy. Since installing Mevion equipment in 2015, we've treated over 500 new patients with Proton Therapy.
